Best time to travel
1. Day: Arrival – Durres
Flight to Tirana and welcoming by our German speaking guide at the airport, and transfer to our hotel in Durres.
2. Day: Durrës - Berat - Apollonia - Vlora
Morning ride to Berat, the city of 1000 windows - as Berat is also called – and its fortress which is inhabited to this day, are part of UNESCO’s World Cultural Heritage. Then continuing to the excavations of Apollonia, a colony built more than 2500 years ago by the ancient Greeks in honor of Apollo. After the tour, we continue our journey to the hotel in Vlora.
3. Day: Vlora - Llogara Nationalpark - Saranda
After the overnight stay in Vlora, we continue along the picturesque coastal road along the Albanian Riviera to the north. Unique nature awaits us at the Llogara National Park. Our next stop is Himara – a true jewel of South Albania, where we stay for a little leisure to enjoy the great beach promenade. We make a photo-stop at the peninsula of Porto Palermo to photograph the massive, triangular fort of Ali Pasha. In the evening we reach Saranda where we have a dinner and an overnight.
4. Day: Saranda – Butrint – Ksamil - Saranda
In the morning we leave for Butrint – another UNESCO World Cultural Heritage. During excavations, a large number of ancient buildings were discovered here, and parts of it are still amazingly well preserved. In the Baptistery, a beautiful, colorful mosaic depicts two peacocks and a vase full of grapes. Heading back to Saranda, we make a stop at Ksamil and marvel the so-called “Blue-Eye”, then return to our hotel in Saranda.
5. Day: Saranda – Gjirokaster – Korca
On the way to Gjirokaster, UNESCO’s World Cultural Heritage, we visit the monastery Mesopotam. Gjirokaster, also called “The city of stones” offers a lot – visit to the city’s fortress at your request, and also the only museum of arms in Albania. After that, we continue driving to the mountain world of Albania all the way to our hotel.
6. Day: Korca – Ohrid
We wisit Korca in the morning, on our way to the Macedonian border and the famous and magnificent Ohrid lake, the oldest and deepest lake in Europe. The lake and Ohrid city itself are both part of UNESCO’s World Heritage. Along the way, we visit St. Naum Monastery, embedded in a unique nature, surrounded by the Springs of Lake Ohrid and Crn Drim river, which we explore during a rowboat excursion. Afterwards, we drive to our hotel in Ohrid.
7. Day: Ohrid – Elbasan – Durres
The following morning is reserved for the beautiful UNESCO city of Ohrid. We start our day with a boau trip and let the flair of the city charm us from the water. Afterwards we explore the city on foot and visit King Samoil’s fortress, and some of the most cherished of 365 churches in Ohrid, which justifies Ohrid’s alternative name – Jerusalem of the Balkans. We leave Ohrid in the afternoon, where driving along the old Roman road “Via Egnatia” we reach the town of Elbasan. After a short visit, we return on the coast once again to Durres – Albania’s largest port town, where the largest amphitheater on the Balkan peninsula was built in the 2nd century before Christ. After a detailed city tour, we return to the hotel in Durres.
8. Day: Durres - Kruja – Tirana – Durres
Drive to Kruja, the city of national hero Skenderbeg. We see the impressive fortress and visit the old town with the oriental bazar. Continuing to Tirana for an extensive sightseeing, including Skenderbeg Square with its magnificent Italian buildings and the former seat of Enver Hoxha. Then drive back to our hotel in Durres.
9. Day: Departure
Transfer to airport and return flight.
